Have you heard of nitroglycerin? It’s a drug that gets millions of prescriptions from American doctors every year for people who are at risk of heart attack or heart angina. When you get your symptoms, you’re supposed to pick up a pill, and tuck it under your tongue for emergency relief. And now it turns out, that those pills may not have been doing as much good as they should have – because more than half of the generic and other versions of nitroglycerin that have been on the market for years, have not had their effectiveness checked out by the FDA. Everyone knows that long-term use of cigarettes and other tobacco products can cause a whole host of health problems, including lung, mouth, and throat cancer, emphysema, and heart disease. But despite knowing what cigarette smoke does to the body, many people find it very difficult to quit. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance, which means it requires lots of persistence, will power, and determination to break the habit. Here are a few basic tips to stop smoking.

First, if you’re serious about quitting, then you need to see your doctor. A physician can evaluate your problem and then give you some specific advice about how to get cigarettes out of your life for good. A doctor’s list of tips to stop smoking might include adopting an exercise regimen, modifying your diet, and perhaps a prescription for Zyban (Wellbutrin), Chantix, or a similar medication that has been proving effective at helping people kick the habit. Being Responsible For Your Parents’ Elderly Health Needs

A GrandmotherCreative Commons License photo credit: andrewrennie

If today you are blissfully unburdened by responsibility for an elderly parent, one day you will be, as all of us are bound to be. It doesn’t come upon you all at once though. It usually starts with little episodes of memory loss. Your father who would never forget your wedding anniversary or your birthday, seems to no longer really care to remember. He tells the same stories over and over again, and seems to not even be aware that he’s told it before. Time flies, and almost as if overnight, your old father or mother can no longer be independent. And like so many people charged with elderly health care, you spend perhaps 25 hours every week helping with doctors’ appointments, meals, and oh, so many things. You notice that doing all of this on top of taking care of your own family, becomes a terrible burden. Or perhaps you are just retired and were only just beginning to enjoy the peace and quiet of your golden years, when your mother broke something seriously in the fall. Your whole life in an instant becomes all about taking care of her. If this is you, you need to know that 20% of America is caught in the same predicament. That number will double in a mere 50 years. Hip and Leg Pain From Failed Implants

Artificial hip implants are supposed to last about 15 – 20 years. And yet my father, barely 2 years into his artificial implant surgery, began to complain of serious hip and leg pain and found that his high-priced hip implants had failed. Not only did he have to put up with all the pain and mental anguish, we had to pay $70,000 to have the failed implants removed and new ones put in. We’ve heard a lot from the manufacturer who made that implant; they want to take a close look at it to see what went wrong. But not once has there been an offer to replace it under warranty or anything. That’s when I found out that the consumer protection warranty and return rules that apply to a $50 boom box, are nowhere to be seen for life-saving systems like medical implants. (more…)

Causes Of Abdominal Pain

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

If you’re experiencing abdominal pain, there’s a good chance that you need to see a doctor in order to get yourself straightened out. Abdominal pain can be an indicator of any number of maladies, from the benign (overeating) to the malignant (stomach cancer). The key in determining what is causing your abdominal pain is to note its frequency, its location, its severity, and any other specifics you can note about it.

Scientifically speaking, the abdomen is the area from your pelvic bone to the bottom of the ribs. This includes your stomach, bowels, liver, gall bladder, and several other internal organs. Because of the vast array of vital organs located in your abdomen, it’s important to note the exact location of your abdominal pain. (more…)

Acid Reflux Wedge Pillow

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Anyone who suffers from acid reflux (also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD) undoubtedly experiences a bit of dread at the first onset of symptoms. These vary from person to person, but typically manifest in the form of heartburn, regurgitation, or general stomach discomfort. The symptoms usually signal beginnings of a sleepless night as you try to keep your stomach contents settled. That’s not the most enjoyable way to spend an evening, which is why I recommend using an acid reflux wedge pillow instead of a standard bed pillow. (more…)

Do You Have A Bad Gallbladder?

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

It’s been estimated that about 20% of Americans, with the majority being over the age of 40, develop a bad gallbladder along the road of life. Both lifestyle (eating habits) and genetic factors play a role. If you’re overweight, suffer from gastrointestinal disease and have high serum cholesterol levels, you’re far more vulnerable to developing a bad gallbladder. Women also have a higher incidence of gallbladder disease, as do certain ethnic groups, such as Native Americans and Mexican Americans. If you eat a diet high in fats and spicy foods, this is another contributing factor. In fact, you can develop a bad gallbladder due to certain, common foods to which you have an allergic response, such as eggs, dairy products, carbonated drinks, chocolate and even coffee! (more…)

There really isn’t treatment for most types of dementia. It is actually just management. In some countries it was found that the rate of onset of dementia is much slower if there is far less use of drugs and more independence for patents. This article is about dementia and how it is managed.

Dementia is an organic brain disease caused by underlying diseases, such as brain tumors, environmental contaminants, or drug related factors. The goal of treatment of dementia is to control the symptoms, and treat any underlying disease if present, which can also be nutrition or hormone related. (more…)
