You pay close attention to each and every sneeze, sniffle, or ache your baby has during the first year of life. There is always the fear that something can go wrong. Babies are tiny and vulnerable, but most are stronger than you think. You may begin to relax some when your baby starts moving around and enters the toddler years. Toddler health is just as important as baby health, but you may not have to look so hard to find when something is wrong as your child is better at communicating with you now, even if they speak very few words. The whole point of reading the latest health news these days seems to be about the sensational connections scientists make between the worst diseases, and innocent things in your life that you just don’t expect to have an effect on your health. One day you read about how you can get a miscarriage from using canned food, because they apply a coating of rust retardant on the insides of cans; and then you read about how they believe children get autism from the chemicals in food colors. Well, in keeping with the spirit of that fine line of startling disclosures, here’s a new one. Is it ever possible that if your child catches a strep throat infection, that it can lead him to problems like the OCD children can develop, or annoying tics?

That was just a rhetorical question; because scientists now are somewhat positive about the connection, and even have a fancy (aka complicated) name for it – here goes – Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infection – Pandas for short. (more…)

An Unusual Treatment of ADHD

The kind of news reports you see around, you have to wonder how it is that we hear words like autism or ADHD bandied about so much these days. Where were these disorders when we were growing up 20 years ago? There was a report in the Journal of Attention Disorders a short time ago about a research study. According to it, there is now strong suspicion, that it is chemical pollution in our water and atmosphere that is responsible for autism. A child’s young and developing brain is easily susceptible to the effects of industrial chemicals. And now, here’s a new study, this time about ADHD. It should be right up your street, if you’re one of those anxious parents trying hard to find that one magic option that will completely turn around treatment of ADHD for your child. The study finds something that might seem obvious, but still needs stressing – time spent out in nature, helps a child or rein in the anxious fretting, fidgeting and daydreaming characteristic of ADHD.
