Possessing a skill, a talent, is a wonderful thing. Finding a way to make your talent work for you is another thing altogether. You would think that doctors and surgeons, of all people, would never have to worry about getting a steady gig, being in demand. We keep hearing about how the doctors in this country are just swamped with patients. That is really true of doctors at hospitals where insurance cover pays for treatment; it is less true of elective treatment – laser eye surgery, Botox and the like. Eye surgeons for instance, need to work hard on getting the word-of-mouth going in all the traditional ways, on their expertise and their skill if they want to keep their business afloat. If you’re experiencing abdominal pain, there’s a good chance that you need to see a doctor in order to get yourself straightened out. Abdominal pain can be an indicator of any number of maladies, from the benign (overeating) to the malignant (stomach cancer). The key in determining what is causing your abdominal pain is to note its frequency, its location, its severity, and any other specifics you can note about it.
Scientifically speaking, the abdomen is the area from your pelvic bone to the bottom of the ribs. This includes your stomach, bowels, liver, gall bladder, and several other internal organs. Because of the vast array of vital organs located in your abdomen, it’s important to note the exact location of your abdominal pain. Read the rest of this entry »

Once in a while you’ll stumble across documentaries dealing with remarkable topics — a devastating typhoon, a sea creature that eats up its mother upon birth, a woman who drives with her feet, and so on. The public is fascinated by what’s unusual and foreign to them, hence there are shows like Ripley’s Believe it or Not. It’s usually the strange cases that get most of people’s attention. The kind of news reports you see around, you have to wonder how it is that we hear words like autism or ADHD bandied about so much these days. Where were these disorders when we were growing up 20 years ago? There was a report in the Journal of Attention Disorders a short time ago about a research study. According to it, there is now strong suspicion, that it is chemical pollution in our water and atmosphere that is responsible for autism. A child’s young and developing brain is easily susceptible to the effects of industrial chemicals. And now, here’s a new study, this time about ADHD. It should be right up your street, if you’re one of those anxious parents trying hard to find that one magic option that will completely turn around treatment of ADHD for your child. The study finds something that might seem obvious, but still needs stressing – time spent out in nature, helps a child or rein in the anxious fretting, fidgeting and daydreaming characteristic of ADHD. Anyone who suffers from acid reflux (also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD) undoubtedly experiences a bit of dread at the first onset of symptoms. These vary from person to person, but typically manifest in the form of heartburn, regurgitation, or general stomach discomfort. The symptoms usually signal beginnings of a sleepless night as you try to keep your stomach contents settled. That’s not the most enjoyable way to spend an evening, which is why I recommend using an acid reflux wedge pillow instead of a standard bed pillow. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s been estimated that about 20% of Americans, with the majority being over the age of 40, develop a bad gallbladder along the road of life. Both lifestyle (eating habits) and genetic factors play a role. If you’re overweight, suffer from gastrointestinal disease and have high serum cholesterol levels, you’re far more vulnerable to developing a bad gallbladder. Women also have a higher incidence of gallbladder disease, as do certain ethnic groups, such as Native Americans and Mexican Americans. If you eat a diet high in fats and spicy foods, this is another contributing factor. In fact, you can develop a bad gallbladder due to certain, common foods to which you have an allergic response, such as eggs, dairy products, carbonated drinks, chocolate and even coffee! Recently, someone challenged me to name the 10 healthiest foods. I found the query intriguing — there are literally thousands of foods from which to choose! After pondering this question, it occurred to me that most Americans get more than their fair share of meat and dairy products and therefore need no urging to include these foods in their diets. We all know that excessive amounts of fat, sugar and processed foods aren’t good for us. That narrows the field of candidates for inclusion in this list of the 10 healthiest foods we should be consuming. You’ve guessed it by now, right? While being ultra-rich in nutrients and cancer-fighting antioxidants, produce is perhaps the most neglected item on our menus. Read the rest of this entry »

Skin cancer occurs to many people around the world and around 1 million new cases are reported each year. This is a growing problem as more and more people are exposed to the harmful UV rays of the sun. Many experts cite the depletion of the ozone layer as a reason for the increase in skin cancer rates all around the world. Almost 50% of all people in the U.S. will develop some form of this cancer by the time they are in their mid 60s and that is alarming.
There are several types of skin cancer including basal cell carcinoma or basal cell epithelioma. This is the most common form of skin cancer and one of the common symptoms are sores that refuse to heal with time. This type of skin cancer does not usually spread and is most common on the face and neck, areas that are exposed to dangerous UV rays. Read the rest of this entry »
